Compendio Gallery
20th-Century & Contemporary Italian Design
Compendio Gallery was founded in Rome in 2012 by Lorenzo Ciompi and Corrado Azzolini, who had already begun collecting together in 1992. Its focus ranges from mid-century Italian design to contemporary work — Lorenzo Ciompi, the owner, is a private collector with deep experience in Italian design built since the early 1990s.
His collection includes celebrated pieces by Gio Ponti and other major Italian designers — Ico Parisi, Osvaldo Borsani, Carlo De Carli, Carlo Mollino, Melchiorre Bega and Joe Colombo. Many were published in magazines such as AD, The World of Interiors, Elle and Domus.
Through exhibitions and careful selection, Compendio Gallery explores and rediscovers the Italian furniture of the architects of 20th-century design — a field overlooked for too long. A close relationship with the most important historical Italian archives lets the gallery offer complete and accurate information.
These pieces have featured in the most important Gio Ponti exhibitions: “Gio Ponti: A World”, London 2002 at the Design Museum, Milan 2003 at the Triennale and Rotterdam 2003 at the Nai Museum. Works from the collection are held in the permanent collections of the Triennale in Milan and MoMA in New York, and Lorenzo Ciompi is one of the main donors of the Triennale Design Museum in Milan.
At Via Savoia 37, in the centre of Rome — an enclave near Villa Borghese, facing the archaeological site of Villa Albani Torlonia, which Winckelmann called “the most magnificent house in the world” — Lorenzo Ciompi shows a selection of contemporary furniture and objects alongside icons of 20th-century Italian decorative art.
